• TaylorMade P790 – Forged Distance Iron/3-PW, 50°/True Temper Dynamic Gold 105 (Steel)/UST Recoil 780/760 ES (Graphite)

The P790 irons are TaylorMade‘s latest entry in the “forged distance” category.  These types of irons are growing in popularity lately as advances in fabrication techniques and metallurgy have allowed designers more flexibility in how they build clubs.  While in most cases these clubs started as long iron replacements, we are starting to see more of them offered as full sets and the P790’s are part of this trend.  The TaylorMade P790 irons are now available for fitting at Ted & Dave Custom Golf.

Forged from 4140 carbon steel, the P790’s maintain the compact look of a players iron while offering the benefit of faster ballspeeds and more forgiveness.  The ballspeed element is achieved in part by the thin faces of the irons, about 1.75mm in the 3-7 irons, and the use of SpeedFoam.  SpeedFoam is a polyurethane compound injected in to the hollow body of the iron which TaylorMade says increases both ballspeed and improves the feel of the irons at impact (see diagram below).  Forgiveness is improved by the SpeedPocket found on the sole of the 3-7 irons (see photo below) which increases flexibility in the bottom of the face which helps on thin shots.  Tungsten weighting is placed strategically via metal-injection-molding inside of the head to increase the MOI (moment of inertia – a measure of forgiveness) and precisely locate the Centre of Gravity for ideal launch conditions.

The P790’s are available in 3-PW and a 50° wedge.  The stock shafts are the True Temper Dynamic Gold 105 in steel and the UST Recoil 780/760 ES in graphite.
